East to NYS

For our first day back to individual freedom we went to the Clark County Museum.  I must say that it is the largest and most informative county museum I have ever seen.  The interior museum had a wonderful historical perspective of the area from original inhabitants to the building of Las Vegas.  Outside there are period houses. completely furnished, denoting  historical time periods.  An excellent museum.

Heading east.  We tried to, in some ways, match our trip east to the trip west.  Since we had stayed in some nice places and eaten in some great restaurants, it seemed worth it to try.  That only worked a few times, because we had other things to see.

Our first stop on the return trip was in Silt, Colorado.  As mentioned before, Silt has a lovely hotel on the Colorado and a lovely eatery in town.  When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a large number of people congregated mostly in the bar area, but also throughout the restaurant.  Considering the population of Silt is around 3,000 people, it didn’t really compute that there would be this many people in one place at one time.  When we asked for a table, we were told there was a private party going on, but we could be seated in 30 minutes.  It was right then that I realized that all the women in the bar looked like they were going to the Easter parade- but it was the wrong month.  Then I got it!  The TVs were all tuned to the Kentucky Derby.  An interesting way to spend a Saturday afternoon in a small town.  People must have come from miles around to cheer on the horses.  It was a nice slice of Americana.

We had decided to brave the city driving in Denver in order to see two sites – the Colorado Railroad Museum and the Cussler Museum, both in the suburbs.  Much of the railroad museum are outside displays of actual train cars.  Hubby loves the train thing (as I do to a lesser extent), so we spent a good amount of time there.  The next day we found the Cussler Museum of amazing classic cars.  Clive Cussler, if you have not run into the name, is the author of a great number of adventure novels, featuring Dirk Pitt, Isaac Bell, and many other macho characters.  Great adventure books.  In the books the main character owns, drives, or steals an amazingly fancy classic car.  Well, the author owns all of those cars and many of them are displayed at this museum.  They were all in perfect drivable condition.  We were able to chat with the guy who had been working with Cussler for 37 years, refurbishing and maintaining the car collection, over 100 classic cars.  That was a lovely experience.

At this point in the trip, we had been gone from home for almost a month and we decided it was time to get serious about finding NYS again.  But only for a “minute”… Cape Cod is calling.

Note: I took 760 pictures with my new camera during our RS trip.  By the end of that part of the trip, I was tired of clicking and put the camera away, hence no pics for this blog!
